Flashback Friday: Christmas Markets in Germany and Austria!

Spread the love

In 2019, we headed to Europe for our Thanksgiving vacation and it was one of my favorite trips!  We flew in and out of Zurich and visited Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Munich, and Innsbrook as well.  It was a spectacular trip.

My favorite part was visiting the Christmas Markets.  The market in Munich at Marienplatz was my absolute favorite.  We found several Christmas items to bring home, plus sampled many treats and mulled wine and cider.  I have honestly never felt quite so festive!

The first market we went to was in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. I immediately fell in love and decided I needed about 100 of the decorative mugs – okay, I think I brought home 20…  We also went through the GaPa light display there — which was interesting, but not as spectacular as the light displays in our area.  We went to the top of Zugspitze, which was such a beautiful and unique experience, and our hotel in Garmisch was so amazing – with a special sink to drink the water from the fountain and a buffet breakfast that my dreams are made of — and I typically don’t like buffets!  Garmisch-Partenkirchen was my favorite of the towns we visited and definitely a place I plan to visit again.

One of the best meals of our trip was also in Garmisch-Partenkirchen at Zum Wildschutz.  It was such a cozy and unique restaurant and the food was spectacular.  To me, the cozy decor is just what Christmas should feel like!

The Christmas market in Munich was my favorite.  It was the largest we visited and there was so much to see!  We were there on Thanksgiving day and it was so neat to be able to explore the markets and look for treasures with the kids.

While the Christmas markets were a highlight of the trip, we also did so many other things – we toured the BMW Museum and Factory in Munich, ate original Swiss fondue just outside of Zurich, visited the Lindt Chocolate store in Zurich, made true Swiss Army knives in Brunnen, and visited Neuschwanstein!

If you’re wanting to capture the Christmas spirit, a trip to Germany during the Christmas season will definitely set the tone for a joyous holiday!
